Lady Gaga is already a VMA icon. Since she first made her VMA debut in 2009, she has become a force to be reckoned with. She annually makes headlines for her fierce sense of style, her fierce sense of self and the fact that she’s always willing to do the unexpected. That combination has made her a fan favorite. And, she said those qualities are an extension of her as a celebrity.

“I think something that’s always been very important to me … is that the fame as an art form has always been an interesting stage,” she told MTV News during “MTV First: Lady Gaga.” “It begins on the subway or in the car on the way here. It begins when I wake up in the morning and I take a shower. It’s not something that is temporal. It has no end, so I’m excited to continue as an artist to push the boundaries of where pop music can exist.”

2009
Arrival: She hit the carpet at Radio City Music Hall in New York City wearing a designer neck brace, but it was her date, the beloved Kermit the Frog, that really made headlines.

Outfits: Four in the main part of the show, which included her red-carpet Victorian-style gown, her white and blood-smeared performance bra and underwear, a red lace Alexander McQueen dress/mask/top hat combo and a sparkly white dress and wreath hat.

Nominations: She tied pal Beyoncé with nine nods, including Video of the Year and Best Female Video.

Wins: Three, including Best New Artist.

Performances: She gave fans a theatrical take on her “Paparazzi” track, seemingly bleeding all over the stage at the famed New York institution.

2010
Arrival: She hit the carpet in L.A. in a stunning McQueen dress joined by dates that were just as surprising as her 2009 beau: former armed-services members, in protest of the now-defunct “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

Outfits: Three, which included her red-carpet look by McQueen, an edgy black ball gown by Giorgio Armani, and, of course, the infamous meat dress by Franc Fernandez.

Nominations: Thirteen nominations, including nods for Video of the Year, Best Choreography and Best Collaboration.

Wins: Eight wins, including the night’s big prize of Video of the Year for “Bad Romance,” beating out herself for “Telephone.”

Performances: She rather unexpectedly gave a blink-and-you-might-miss-it sneak peek at her 2011 single “Born This Way.” When she hit the stage to accept her Video of the Year award, she sang part of the song’s infectious chorus.

2011
Arrival: She’s certain to arrive, but how will she do it and who will be her date? Frankly, anything is possible.

Outfits: Given her penchant of wearing numerous outfits over the course of the night, we expect many looks at this year’s show.

Nominations: She racked up four noms for Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for “Born This Way,” as well as Best Art Direction and Best Choreography for “Judas.”

Wins: That’s up to the fans, who vote on winners.

Performances: She’s scheduled to open the show and set the vibe for the entire night. Given the caliber of stars (Eminem and Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Madonna with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera) who have done it in the past, it is one of the most-coveted slots in the show.

What do you expect from Lady Gaga at this year’s VMAs? Tell us in the comments!

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year’s highlights and vote for Best New Artist at VMA.MTV.com.

Ke$ha, Adam Lambert, Ne-Yo Have A Few Royal Wedding Gift Ideas

From ‘guyliner’ to American delicacies like Uncrustables, Kathy Griffin, Mike Posner and more tell us what they’d get Will and Kate.

What kind of wedding gift do you give the royal couple who has everything?

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is on Friday (April 29), so MTV News reached out to some of our favorite Hollywood celebrities — from Ke$ha to Adam Lambert. Fortunately, they had some solid ideas!

“I haven’t met them, so it would be kind of awkward,” the “Tik Tok” singer admitted to MTV News. “I might paint them something. Maybe I’ll paint them a guitar.”

Like Ke$ha, other celebs had suggestions that were from the heart, even if they weren’t the most practical.

“I will go out on a limb and say these two individuals maybe haven’t had Uncrustables before in their life. I would get them a strawberry Uncrustable,” Mike Posner said about the pastry.

David Cook followed up on the all-American food idea. “I feel like they have everything except maybe they probably don’t have an Applebee’s gift card. I’ll go [with an] Applebee’s gift card,” the “American Idol” alum said.

Other stars said they’d gift the British prince and soon-to-be-princess with an item they were personally best known for.

“I’d probably buy William some eyeliner,” Lambert said. “He could do that, he could rock that look. I think.”

Ne-Yo was more empathetic, saying he would give gifts that could help shield them from photographers and blend in with everyday people. “Three years’ supply of sunglasses. Yeah, put them on. A bunch of baseball caps, throw those on, and try to move around like regular people,” the singer said. “I can’t imagine what it would be like having to live under that big of a magnifying glass your whole life … and fake mustaches, that’s what I’d give them.”

Brooke Burke went the more traditional route, saying she would get Will and Kate a journal to record the big event. “I would ask them to really take the time to write down thoughts and phrases and wishes,” Burke said. “And not really to lose sight of how they feel about each other now and to really hold on to that feeling.”

Kathy Griffin had good intentions but the comedian couldn’t resist a puke joke.

“If I had to get the royal couple a gift, I would get them the Royal Couple Vomit Bag, which someone sent me a photo of,” Griffin told us. “So you can actually buy vomit bags with their image on it, and I think that that is an honor and I hope that they see it as such.”

What do Britney Spears and Usher have in common? Well, they are both global superstars with a back catalogue of tunes that have kept fans dancing for a really long time and they both recently hooked up with will.i.am for tracks on their latest releases (the Black Eyed Peas mastermind worked on the pop vixen’s Femme Fatale tune “Big Fat Bass”). And, if Spears has her way, she and the “OMG” singer could be hitting the road together.

When Spears sat down to talk with Sway Calloway for her “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale” special — airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV — the singer revealed that Usher is first on her list of artists she’d like to join her on tour.

“Oh, I’m so excited. I’m really excited about going on tour, very,” she explained about her forthcoming summer trek, which happens to have a spot open on the bill now that Enrique Iglesias has pulled out of the gig. “I think Usher’s really great right now. I think he’s really hot right now. That would be cool [to tour with him].”

The North American road trip is expected to kick off June 17 in Sacramento, California, and will run for 26 dates, winding up on August 13 in Toronto. More details will be announced soon.

The “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale” special is a mixture of behind-the-scenes footage of the singer as she wraps up production on her album, which dropped this week, as well as an inside look at her life and fans. In addition, those who couldn’t make Spears’ recent nightclub show in Las Vegas will get to see her as she takes the stage in her latest pop incarnation.

Don’t miss “Britney Spears: I Am the Femme Fatale,” airing Sunday (April 3) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Nude Statue: What Does It Mean?

‘Teenage celebrities [are] exploited early, earlier than what is legal, and the media fuels that,’ artist Daniel Edwards tells MTV News.

The Internet was abuzz this week when controversial artist Daniel Edwards released his latest piece of art: a nude statue of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez with the words “Justin & Selena Forever” inscribed at the base of the statue.

The bronze statue, called “Justin and Selena as One,” plays on the idea of Adam and Eve, with Bieber wearing a strategically placed maple leaf and Gomez wearing a strategically placed Texas Lone Star — references to Justin’s native Canada and Selena’s home state. But Edwards told MTV News the images aren’t meant to be provocative for the sake of being provocative.

“Really, can you think of any teenage couple that’s bigger or been bigger than them? Also, for my point of view, when I look at it, there’s a lot of interesting components to it,” he said of the piece, which will be on display at Dallas’ New Fine Arts. “That was pretty much the obvious point of entry. She is 19, so that takes away a little bit of the edge, I think, but the fact that he’s 17, that was totally the point of it.

“I tried to find my entry into making a comment on that very thing that happens time and again to teenage celebrities, where they’re kind of exploited early, earlier than what is legal, and the media fuels that as best they can,” he continued. “I guess I’m making my commentary about that particular thing that happens.”

The statue also comments on the “double standard” for males and females in the industry. “It only seems to hit the young ladies a lot worse than the men. It’s still there. You see all those beach photos of the two of them. My children are young, but I think I would be freaked out if I saw images of them like that on the Internet,” he said, noting that being a father definitely informs his work.

“If I hadn’t had kids, I think the work would be a lot more provocative, visually,” he said. “But with kids, I always have to make sure it’s something I’m comfortable with them seeing. There’s a certain line I’m not willing to cross with my kids in the house.”

Of all the ways to portray the two teen superstars, Edwards felt that the biblical reference was the perfect way to make his commentary work. “It’s not for the sake of presenting religion. … I think it’s mostly because, from an art-history standpoint, a young couple is always Adam and Eve,” he said. “And so I always try to position my work in historical reference. … It’s a way of giving it a bit of a historical context.”

What do you think of the statue? Let us know in the comments below.
